If a person was to list the qualities that they would want in a friend, I wonder what it would be. Some might say that they just want a friend that they could hang out with. Others might say they want someone who would just be a good listener and there would be a few that would not even know what to look for.
The good news is that scripture gives us qualities of a real friend. In Proverbs 17:17 the first quality of a friend would be one that “loves at all times.” This kind of friend is one that is there for you no matter what. This friend is someone that you depend on even if you would have to call them in the middle of the night
The second quality of a friend is honesty. Proverbs 27:6a says, “Wounds from a friend can be trusted.” This friend is one who will not always tell you what you want to hear but you know that you can trust this friend for he or she is looking out for you.
One who is willing to “to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13) is the third quality of a real friend. This is a friend who is willing to give there all for the one that they care about. They are encouragers, listeners, helpers and willing to give when it is necessary.
As I begin to look at my life, I can see people who have fit these qualities and I will forever be grateful. Do you have these kind of friends in your life?
